When the kids were little we spent a week in Arrowtown. We were skiing, and took the Crown Range road, narrow, gravelled and seeming to consist largely of hairpin bends, to Cardrona ski-field. Now Arrowtown is bigger, the road is sealed, no longer so narrow and definitely not so windy except for the hairpin section. The views are still spectacular.
Bonus: the Chinese settlement in Arrowtown. They have restored parts of this settlement (early Chinese goldminers) and made it into a lovely walk in an historical setting. The houses are quite cosy and would protect against both the intense winter cold and the fierce summer heat. The general store didn’t close until 1925, when the owner died. At the opening, Helen Clark officially apologised to the Chinese for the appalling discrimination meted out to them in the early days by the government of NZ. in the form of excessive taxes for the privilege of staying.
