Long weekend à Auckland (fin janvier)

Les photos ici sont de trois endroits seulement. A quelques pas de notre hôtel, le Bassin du « Viaduct » (Viaduct Basin), quartier célèbre pour avoir hébergé les défis de la coupe de l’America en 2000 et 2003.

Un court voyage en ferry jusqu’à l’autre côté du port nous voit à Devonport, petite ville pleine de souvenirs d’enfance quand ma grand-mère maternelle habitait tout près.

Lundi matin nous avons visité le Musée Maritime, qui offre une grande variété de galleries et expositions. On commence par l’histoire des premiers voyageurs du Pacifique vers cette terre inconnue, un film sur un écran de180°. Suivent d’autres expositions, comme un tableau de la vie sur les baleiniers, une reconstruction de la cabine de l’entrepont des immigrés du 19è siècle (qui bouge et grince), un port typique néo-zélandais du 19-20ième siècle quand le transport par bateau était le plus efficace. Et bien sûr, on ne laisse pas tomber les yachts et la coupe de l’America.

The photos are of three places – First, the Viaduct Basin (America’s Cup, 2002-3), which we had never seen and which was in walking distance of our hotel. Next, Devonport, a short ferry ride across the harbour. Full of childhood memories, as my grandmother lived in the area in the 1950s.

Monday morning, another new place for us – the Maritime Museum. This traces the Maritime history of NZ, starting with the first travellers across the Pacific, (film on 180° screen). There is a great variety of displays, including the whalers, a steerage cabin on an immigrant ship of the 19^th century (including movement and creaks), a reconstruction of a typical NZ port, from the earlier days when coastal shipping was the most efficient method of travel. And of course, yachts and the America’s Cup also have their place.
